Curtis 2, Sumner 0

(University Place, WA) The Sumner Spartans came into the Wednesday’s regular season finale at Curtis with the best record in the 4A SPSL, but that did not matter to the Vikings who scored twice and used stifling defense to upend the Spartan on Senior night for Curtis at Bob Lucey Field.

The first half was locked up at 0-0 with both teams getting some half chances at their opponent’s goal, but it was Curtis who struck first with 3:30 remaining on a penalty kick by Senior Kah’Vayli “KV” Miller. The penalty was brought on by a counterattack and Freshman Shelby Duah got fouled in the box when she was in on goal to force the PK.

Curtis went into the break with a 1-0 lead and built it to 2-0 on an excellent free kick goal by Sophia Mayne just over 3 minutes into the 2nd half.

Sumner slowly got back into the match by generating offense as the 2nd half wore on, and by the final 15 minutes the Spartans were peppering the Curtis goal but were unable to break through.

“KV” Miller earned the ESN Education as a Career Player of the Game award, not only because she scored the first goal, but because of her defense. Miller was all over the pitch defensively making timely tackles and clearances, showing why she is one of the best players in the South Sound.

The loss for Sumner drops them to 10-2-1 and 12-3-1 overall. With Rogers win over South Kitsap, the Rams improved to 10-1-2 to take 1st place in the 4A SPSL standings, though Sumner still won the regular season league title.

The win for Curtis was a huge confidence boost for the Vikings going into the postseason, as they avenged a 3-0 loss at Sumner on October 11. They also improved their overall record to 10-5-1 and 8-4-1 in the 4A SPSL.
