(Puyallup) The Sumner Spartans came into Tuesday’s girls’ soccer match with 4A SPSL rival Puyallup as the last unbeaten team in league play, that all changed as the Vikings shut-out the Spartans 2-0 at Sparks Stadium.
Puyallup took the early lead in the 5th minute on a goal from Ella Bach. The rest of the 1st half was mostly even with both teams creating some half-chances, with the Vikings combining well in the attacking 3rd of the pitch with Melanie Torres, Chloe Roberton and Bach.
In the 2nd half, Sumner came out with renewed energy, creating some scoring chances on long free kicks delivered into the box. Mattie Gillaspy had perhaps the best scoring opportunity for Sumner, as a shot narrowly missed.
Puyallup started to get some corner kicks and capitalized on one of them as Shalai Jamison put a shot that was initially deflected by a Sumner defender into the back of the net to make it 2-0. Jamison has been one of the most inspirational stories South Sound this fall after overcoming a medical condition and is playing her 1st full year of high school varsity soccer, and her goal against rival Sumner was huge for her team and earned her ESN Player of The Game honors.
That would be the final as Puyallup got their biggest win of season to avenge a 1-0 loss to Sumner on Oct. 7. The Vikings pushed their record to 5-4-2 in SPSL play and next travel to South Kitsap on Thursday.
Sumner fell to 8-1-1 in the SPSL and will try to get back on track at Bellarmine on Thursday.
