Seahawks 48, Lions 45
(Detroit, MI) In the highest scoring game in the NFL this season where the Seattle Seahawks never punted, the Seahawks put up 555 yards of total offense and edged the Lions 48-45 to even their record to 2-2 record on the year. The game was also a scoreagami, meaning the 48-45 score was the first in NFL history.
Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith was accurate and effective as the veteran threw for 320 yards on 23-30 passing and 2 touchdowns. I had running back Rashad Penny on my Fantasy Football bench this week, and he made pay with 151 yards and 2touchdowns.
I also had Lions tight-end TJ Hockenson on my FF bench, and he scorched the Seahawks defense with 8 receptions and 179 yards and 2 TDS.
The Seahawks defense continues to struggle with tackling and stopping opposing offenses, allowing an average of 33 points per game in their last 3 games after limiting the Broncos to 16 in the season opener. The 3-4 defensive scheme just is not working, and I wonder what if any adjustments Pete Carroll makes on that side of the ball. However, only big positive on that side is that the defense is forcing turnovers, including that huge pick six that rookie Tariq Woolen took the distance to give the Seahawks some breathing room. Coby Bryant also is starting to come into his own as well, forcing a fumble as well.
My big takeaway in this one is Geno Smith and the offense. His ability to take dissect coverages and take what the defense give him and more importantly, not turn over the ball was huge. I was skeptical of Smith in the preseason because I felt with Geno at QB the Seahawks would have a lot more 3 and outs and rely on their defense to win games. Instead, Geno looked poised and his ability to spread the ball out to all of his weapons was huge. We are starting to see him develop a better connection with DK Metcalf as well. Next week, Seattle travels to New Orleans to face a Saints team that has lost 3 straight close games (1-3) and need a win to stay in playoff race. A win for the Hawks would set up a huge NFC West matchup with the Arizona Cardinals next week.
