Tumwater 38, Kelso 19
(Kelso, WA) Both teams came in 2-0 and Kelso looking to put a feather in their cap with a win over the always formidable T-Birds. The Hilanders came out swinging drawing 1st blood on a spectacular 47-yard run into the end zone with the PAT Kelso led 7-0.
Tumwater would answer with a big run of their own when Logan Cole went 23 yards and in for the score to tie the game at 7-7 and that is how the 1st quarter would end. Tumwater would pile up a couple more scores through the air from QB Alex Overbay for a 5 and 9 yard scoring completions. Tumwater would head to the locker room with a 21-7 lead at the break.
Kelso was not done and were ready to answer getting one score back in the 3rd when Hilander QB Tucker Amrine hit Easton Marshall for a 25-yard strike. Kelso missed the extra point but after 3 quarters it was a one score game 21-13.
Kelso then made it very interesting when they struck 1st in the 4th quarter as Judah Calixte pounded the ball in from the 6-yard line. But once again they missed the PAT and trailed 21-19 but it was tight game.
Tumwater answered with a nice drive that stalled and they settled for a Lukas Stewart field goal to push their lead to 5, 24-19. Carlos Matheny then had another answer for Tumwater sprinting to paydirt from 20-yards out to make it a 2 score game. The T-Birds Jadin Allen would then ice the game when he picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards for the pick 6 for the final 38-19 final.
Alex Overbay the Tumwater QB would earn our Thorbeckes MVP of the game award. Tumwater remains perfect at 3-0 and will travel to Centralia next Friday to open EVCO 2A league play. Kelso drops to 2-1 and plays another tough non-league match-up at Camas next week.
