Chelan 0, Tenino 0
(Tenino, Wa) The black turf at Tenino Beaver Stadium played host to a rare match up of 1A teams. The Chelan Goats came in already playing 2 games and a 1-1 record. The Goats beat Bridgeport last Wednesday in a conference game and then traveled west of the mountains for a 2 match trip that saw them drop 5-0 at Montesano on Friday. Chelan then would turn around and not only play the 2nd of back-to-back games but their 3rd match in 4 days.
This was the Beavers first match of the season and first one under new Head Coach David Montgomery. Montgomery is a longtime assistant and took over when former head coach Kevin Schultz took the head job at South Puget Sound Community College. The Beavers also lost several players to graduation so it was truly a new start for all.
Tenino would control most of the offensive action for the first 10 minutes and would start the pattern of momentum swings throughout the game. Tenino’s midfield of Kami Oliveira, Chloe Grayless and Nicole Fralick did a good job of maintaining possession and feeding the wings along the sidelines. The Goats defense of Josslynn Simmons, Madi Barker and Arabelle Finch were anchored by freshman goalkeeper Avari Barker would not let the beavers get off good crosses. The half would end in a 0-0 tie.
The 2nd half was more up tempo for both sides. Chelan Midfielders Maya Cowan and Kenia Sanchez would win a lot of the possession in the middle of the field but that is where a majority of the game was played. The best chance of the game came with 18 minutes to play. Cheyenne Rossow of Tenino looked to have an open shooting lane but Josslynn Simmons made a great slide in the box to block the attempt. The game would end in a 0-0 tie but it wasn’t the end of the action.
After the whistle and a discussion with the officials who said that the match was over because of league rules and it was a non-league match. So the coaches got together and decided to have an unofficial shootout. The Goats won it 4-2 but their official record is still 1-1-1 and Tenino is 0-0-1. Chelan will next play on Tuesday when they host Cle-Elum and Tenino is back in action also on Tuesday at King’s Way Christian in Vancouver.
