(Purdy, WA) – On a night where former Gig Harbor Defensive Coordinator Darrin Reeves was making his head coaching debut for the Gig Harbor, it was the Tides defense and running game that made the difference in a 20-0 shutout of 3A contender Spanaway Lake at Roy Anderson Field in Purdy.
The game was a defensive slugfest throughout, but it was Gig Harbor who took advantage of Sentinels miscues and made big plays. The Tides were able to capitalize on a Sentinels first half fumble and turned it into points in the 2nd quarter when Senior Quarterback Will Landram scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 in the 2nd quarter. Senior running back Blaze Herbert was big on that drive as well, setting up the score with some explosive carries.
Spanaway Lake showed some glimpses of their talent, like a leaping catch from Oklahoma commit Jasiah Wagoner in the first half and some excellent runs from Sophomore running back D’Aryhian Clemons. However, penalties and missed opportunities hurt the Sentinels all night, and Gig Harbor led 7-0 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the Tides nailed some short field goals but the highlight play of the game was a 50 yard run from Blaze Herbert in the 3rd quarter and that gave all the momentum to the Tides.
Gig Harbor improves to 1-0 and travels to Bonney Lake next week, while Spanaway Lake hosts Mt. SI.
