Interesting tidbits from last week

DQ’s

Talking to Stewards

Last Friday was the first disqualification of a horse finishing 1st when Missed the Boat with Juan Gutierrez got taken down and placed 5th, pushing Pistol Power with Jake Samuels into the Winner’s Circle. It had taken 3 1/2 months to get the 1st 1st place DQ. But it took just 2 days for #2 when Chuckanut Bay with Alex Cruz got DQ’d for bumping in the stretch and Runnin Out of Days with Juan Gutierrez aboard got moved up. So Guti has been on both ends of the 2 DQ’s that have taken down winners.

Emotional Win

Leading Owner John Parker has a large stable and runs a bunch of horses and has a huge lead in the win column. He has 22 wins, 8 short of his goal of 30 wins and with 8 days of racing left it’s not hard to figure he needs to average a win a day to hit his goal.

But another goal is to turn his beloved Gold Rush Dancer into a long term stud and he picked up his 4th win as a stud and 1st Stakes win when 2-year-old Annette Marie stunned in the Washington Cup Fillies at 13-1 with Kevin Radke aboard. Parker was emotional in the Winner’s Circle as he named Annette Marie after his niece who passed away. Parker says he felt Annette with him in the Winner’s Circle and made the win that more special.

New/Old Faces

Guillermo Suarez

It was quarter horse stakes weekend and that always brings in some unfamiliar riders to the NW and this year we got to know Guillermo Suarez as he swept both stakes races and called it his best day of racing ever.

Cerapio Figueroa who rode here very successfully in 2020 and then for a short time last season was back for the first time since June of 2021 to ride in both QH stakes races where he didn’t hit the board but he did pick up a thoroughbred ride in the 2nd and pulled a 15-1 upset on Stanwood Warrior.

Vladmir Jensen had ridden sporadically earlier in the season and then kinda disappeared from riding races, we were wondering if he was still here and then bam he’s back this last weekend and although still looking for his 1st win he did well with 3 mounts posted 2 places and a show and now has a 0-3-4 record from 23 mounts. Let’s see if Vlad can get into the Winner’s Circle before the end of the meet.

Trainers firing on all cylinders

Several Trainers had great weekends and multiple wins. Leading trainer Jorge Rosales led all with 5 wins and could have been 6 but got taken down in the DQ on Sunday. He leads the trainer standings with 33. Candi Cryderman had 3 wins this as she holds onto the #4 spot in the standings. All-time leading trainer Frank Lucarelli got a pair of wins and sits 3rd but most special of all maybe is Dr Ryland Harwood. Harwood started 2 and won both with Lafonda at 6-1 with Leslie Mawing in the 8th and final race on Saturday. On Sunday Dr Harwood sent Lucinda Rella to the gates in the 3rd and Kevin Radke went wire to wire on the 7-5 betting choice. Better Dr Harwood owns both horses and he and his wife bred both for a true family affair.
