Sunday Stakes

John Deere Juvenile Challenge for Quarter Horses

Bee a Freight Train w/Guillermo Suarez

A field of 9 2-year-olds went to the post at 350 yards in the 1st of 2 Quarter Horse Stakes with a total $46,000 purse. The 4-5 odds-on choice was Bee a Freight Train with Guillermo Suarez aboard and was coming in with a dominant record including winning the trial at Emerald Downs back on August 7 by nearly 2 lengths.

Drawing post #5 the biggest concern is getting away clean without issues from either side. On Sunday Suarez got Bee to break again like a fast running freight train and the colt blew away the field for an easy 1 3/4 length victory finishing 4/10ths of a second fast than 2nd place Rebalicious with Javier Matias at 41-1. Check the Cartel and Mark Jasso got 3rd at 17-1 and 26-1 shot The Weekend with Cruz Contreras completed the superfecta.

Bee A Freight Train runs for Alberto Avila and is trained by Edwin Rosales and earned $21,505 for his efforts. Bee a Freight Train is now 4-1-0 from 7 lifetime starts and pushes his bank account to nearly $45,000.

The exotic bets paid well despite the winner paying only $3.60 to win but also $3 to place with Rebalicious returning $13.80 to place and $10.20 to show. The $1 exacta was good for $29.50, 50-cent tri $69.50 and the 10-cent superfecta $168.28 or $1,682.80 for the $1 super. Not bad for a 4-5 shot win.

ESN talks with winning Jockey Guillermo Suarez

Bank of America Championship for Quarter Horses

Dr Tool w/Guillermo Suarez

10 horses went to the post in the $50,000 Bank of America Championship for 3-year-olds and up going 440 yards. This time no big favorite and the betting was well spread out. The post time favorite was Cm Once ina Bluemoon with James Wooten riding. After that there were 4 horses between 4-1 and 5-1 and the other 5 were 11-1 to 32-1.

When starter Mark Gibson flung the gates open 9-2 Cm Boom Shakalaka with Javier Matias took the early advantage and right there with him was 5-1 Dr Tool with Guillermo Suarez. Cm Once ina Bluemoon and Super Bowl Sunny Day at 11-1 with Jake Samuels were altogether. Those 4 started and ended together without any of them willing to give in and in the final 100-yards Dr Tool edged out to a lead and then held off Super Bowl Sunny Day by a neck to win the Bank of America. The victory also earns Dr Tool a berth in the $250,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship on Oct. 22 at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Super Bowl on the far outside in the 10 post got the nose down in front of Cm Once ina Bluemoon who had a neck advantage over Cm Boom Shakalaka. Those 4 were 3/4 of a length in front of the other 6. Dr Tool was ridden by the winner of the John Deere, Suarez and trained by the same trainer Edwin Rosales. The owner is LG Racing and they picked up a $25,289 1st place check and now has earned $167,412 lifetime. The 5-year-old gelding has now run 25 times with a 5-6-3 record.

Dr Tool paid $13.80 coupled with 11-1 Super Bowl Sunny Day the $1 exacta paid $66.10, 50-cent trifecta $133.20 and the $1 superfecta $1,520.90 or $152.09 for the dime bet. The 1st 50-cent pick 4 was a solid $392.90.

Washington Cup Juvenile Colts and Geldings

Chuckanut Bay outside, Runnin Out of Days inside

The $50,000 Washington Cup Juvenile for colts and geldings ended with controversy as the winning horse, Chuckanut Bay was disqualified and placed 2nd behind 1-5 odds on choice Runnin Out of Days. It was truly a match race as those two had 13 lengths on the rest of the field.

Runnin Out of Days with Juan Gutierrez aboard was the overwhelming favorite after winning and breaking his maiden in the King County Express by more than 10 lengths. Chuckanut Bay was the 2nd choice at 5-1 after he just failed to last in the Lads losing by 3/4 of a length to It’s Turbo.

Runnin Out of Days did not get a good break and was in 3rd behind Chuckanut Bay and 30-1 Withee with Leslie Mawing up. As they ran out of the 6 1/2 furlong chute Gutierrez had to decide whether to rush up to the leaders or let them settle and stalk. He kinda did both by pushing up the rail enough not to allow Chuckanut to get over to the rail but he did not push past him either and those two set the fractions while pulling away from the rest of the field. They rean the quarter in a soft 22.30 and the half 44.75 which left plenty in the tank for both and the duel was on.

Talking to Stewards

Chuckanut Bay never gave up the lead but at about the 16th pole the two bumped and then a few strides later bumped again. In the end Chuckanut Bay got the win by a neck. The Stewards then hung the Inquiry sign and Juan Gutierrez lodged an objection. After about 5 minutes the Stewards disqualified Chuckanut Bay and placed him 2nd moving Runnin Out of Days up to 1st.

30-1 Withee held onto 3rd and 30-1 Uncle Pete closed late from last to grab 4th and complete the superfecta. Despite the pair of 30-1 shots hitting the board the pays were meager with the 10-cent super paying $5.81, the 50-cent trifecta $4.45 and the $1 exacta paid 4-5 or $1.80.

Runnin Out of Days is owned by BDW Racing LLC, Abel Pulver and Shawn Sudo and trained by Blaine Wright who extended his lead in the Stakes trainer standings with his 6th Stakes win of the year. Juan Gutierrez re-took the lead in the Jockey Stakes standings with his 4th win. Runnin Out of FDays is a Washington bred by Abraaj out of Annie Over by Atta Boy Roy and was bred by Tom and Becky Birklid. Runnin Out of Days remains perfect with a 2 for 2 lifetime record and doubled his earnings to $55,000.

Washington Cup for Fillies

Annette Marie w/ Kevin Radke

Miss Dynamic was coming off her 1st loss after two dominating performances and the betting public felt she would bounce back and bet her down to 1-5. Meantime, Juan Gutierrez had a choice to make to ride Miss Dynamic for the 4th time or stick with Annette Marie who he rode in her last breaking her maiden with a 6 1/2 length win. He chose to stick with Miss Dynamic and Kevin Radke got the call on Annette Marie.

13-1 Annette Marie got away 1st out of the gate and Miss Dynamic again a bit tardy at the start and settled in a half length behind. 4-1 2nd choice Driveway with Alex Cruz remained unhurried in 3rd and 40-1 Shelby Gold and Leslie Mawing was in 4th. Those 4 would sprint away and the other 5 from 12-1 to 82-1 did not improve from their positions.

Meantime, Radke and Annette Marie controlled the pace of the 6 1/2 furlong run going a pedestrian 22.31 for the quarter and 45.18 at the 1/2 mile mark. Miss Dynamic did work up the rail and stuck her head in front  of Annette Marie but could not give her the slip and in fact Annette Marie dug back in and as they swung for home overtook Miss Dynamnic and now needed to keep Driveway at a safe distance who was closing from 4th place. Cruz popped the question and came roaring down the middle of the stretch but Radke asked Annette Marie to respond and she did running a huge race and posting the 3/4 length victory over Driveway in a time of 1:18.47. Miss Dynamic barely held 3rd as longshot Shelby Gold closed well for 4th.

Annette Marie is trained by Candi Cryderman. The win for owner John Parker was extra special as he is also the breeder. Annette Marie is by Parker’s Longacres Mile Champion Gold Rush Dancer out of Mo’orea Island by Midnight Lute. Parker further stated the win was exceptionally sweet because he named Annette Marie after his late niece.

Annette Marie paid $28.20 and the $1 exacta was $47.80, the 50-cent trifecta $46.90 and the 10-cent super $60.77. Annette Marie earned $27,500 and pushed her lifetime earnings to $40,612 and is now 2-0-1 from 4 starts.

Other Sunday Races

Stanwood Warrior w/Cerapio Figueroa

In the 2nd race former Emerald regular rider Cerapio Figueroa returned from Southern California to ride in both Quarter Horse Stakes but picked up a ride in the 2nd on outsider Stanwood Warrior. Figueroa rode regularly for Jorge Rosales so Rosales put him up on Stanwood and Figueroa was happy to step back into time as he broke 3rd and sat just off the favorite Holyjazz. As they swung for the home Cerapio let loose on the outside and pulled away to a length win and did so at a hefty 16-1. Remmah Racing Inc are the owners.

In the 3rd race Lucinda Rella and Kevin Radke went straight to the front and never looked back. Lucinda Rella was bet down to favoritism at 7-5 and turning for home led by 7 lengths and held that advantage to win easily and ran the 6-furlongs in 1:10.95. Lucinda Rella is owned and trained by Ryland Harwood.

In the 5th race the top 3 all came from well back but it was betting choice Mike Operator with Alex Cruz that got 1st run and held off the late runs of 20-1 RB Eye who took 2nd by a half length over 6-1 Master Recovery. Mike Operator ran the 6 1/2 in 1:16.68. Mike Operator is owned by Oscar Heredia and trained by Jorge Rosales.

Mr Stang w/Jose Zunino

In the 8th Mr Stang went off at 10-1 with Jose Zunino aboard but Mr Stang ran like a “Stang” powering by Spittin Image in the final 100 yards for a 1/2 length victory. Mr Stang is owned by REV Racing and Frank Lucarelli and trained by Lucarelli. Mr Stang paid $23.40 and $34.80 on the $2 Combo ticket. The Annette Marie to Mr Stang $1 Daily Double paid a big $156.90.

In the finale, Floyd Knowles with Alex Cruz held off 12-1 Street Demand’s late surge to secure the wins. Floyd Knowles ran the 6-furlongs in 1:10.82 and is owned by Eliska Kubinova and trained by Jorge Rosales.

Floyd Knowles capped off several card end bets with the pick 3 paying a big $497, the 3rd pick 4 paid $388, the pick 5 $808.10 and the 20-cent Jackpot pick 6 paid $870.34 with a carryover of $4,663. The 50-cent Super Hi-5 paid $2,022.35.

Saturday Re-Cap

Feature Race

Prospera w/Javier Matias

A field of 5 went 6-furlongs in Saturday’s feature race and Prospera coming off a win a little more than a week ago was bet down to 3-2 favoritism. Jockey Javier Matias used the same tactics as in the 4-year-old filly’s last race breaking from the #1 position sitting behind the front pace cutting the corner and running down the leaders to win by a 1/2 length in a brilliantly timed ride.

The gray flash would get the neck win over a tenacious Fire Escape the 2nd favorite with Alex Cruz aboard and who had set all the fractions of going 21.71, 44.26 to just miss and the final time at 1:09.20. 17-1 Unsinkable Molly B came from last to get up for 3rd and 6-1 Oreo’s Dream capped the superfecta.

Prospera races for the leading owner John Parker who recorded his 21st win of the meet and is trained by Candi Cryderman. Prospera was claimed by Parker 2 races back for $15,000 from the Frank Lucarelli barn and won her 3rd race in a row. She is now 4-3-0 from 11 lifetime starts and added $13,750 to her earnings which now is nearly $56,000.

Saturday Notes

Hey Sequoia with Jake Samuels won the 1st as the odds on betting favorite for owners Rancho Viejo and Kyrie Patino and trainer Rigoberto Velasquez. 3-1 Zatter took the 2nd with Juan Gutierrez aboard trained by Joe Toye for owners Paddock Partners Ltd. In the 3rd race owner/trainer Sergio Perez continues to be red hot sending out winner Mileys Bluecat with Alex Cruz riding at 5-2. Cruz won his 2nd race in the 4th for trainer Steve Bullock and owners Ronald and Nina Hagen with an off the pace run from Gold Coast Girl at 3-1. The Cruz daily double paid $19.90.

The best betting race of the day was next with 7-1 Hunters Ghost surging late to catch 22-1 After the Candy who almost stole the race on the front end. Kevin Radke just got enough out of Ghost to get the win and foiled the plans of Jake Samuels trying to score his 2nd win of the day. The $2 win paid $17, the $2 combo was good for $29.60 while the $2 place paid $16.40 for Candy. The $1 exacta hit triple figs at $100.70, the $1 trifecta was good for $410.50 and the $1 superfecta rang up $1,653.20.

Back to the favorites in race 6 with Red Noon Rising giving Alex Cruz his 3rd win of the night paying $5.20 to win but a chance to hit big again as 26-1 Kiss Ride Goodbye with Vladmir Jensen got up for 2nd in a 5 horse blanket finish for 2nd. The $1 exacta paid $50.70, the $1 tri $212.60 and the $1 super $1,462.30 all with a 3-2 shot on top. Red Noon Rising races for Alan Peterson and is trained by Jorge Rosales.

In the finale, 6-1 Lafonda got Leslie Mawing into the winner’s circle along with owner/trainer Ryland Harwood. There was a deadheat for 3rd between Moscow Lady and Tyche Awaits You which created 2 trifecta and superfecta pay-outs which all paid decently. The Super Hi-5 had 2 winning combinations and each paid $619.25, good chance 1 person had both.

Friday Re-Cap

Feature Race

Pistol Power w Jake Samuels

The feature race Friday night was in the 1st with a field of 5 going a mile and 2-1 2nd choice Missed the Boat with Juan Gutierrez broke 1st and went to the lead and would make each pole a winning one with a 3 1/2 length win in a time of 1:35.17. Easy, peasy right? Wrong. As Missed the Boat got a good break from his 4 post entering the 1st turn he squeezed down on both Pistol Power and Mixo causing them to check significantly. The Stewards hung the Inquiry sign and took down the winner placing him last behind Mixo.

Pistol Power had sat behind the front runners and finished well to be 2nd by a neck over favored Hydrogen. Rocky Tough ran on to be 4th so the official order ended up being Pistol Power with Jake Samuels 1st, Hydrogen 2nd, Rocky Tough 3rd, Mixo 4th and Missed the Boat 5th. This was also the 1st disqualification of a 1st place horse this season.

This was the 2nd win in a row for Pistol Power and Samuels for owners Lisa Baze, Kyrie Patino and S and M Stable and trained by Rigoberto Velasquez. The 8-year-old gelding is a Washington bred by War Power out of Pistolpackin’gal by Tribunal and was bred by Donald Lawrence.

Pistol Power earned $9,075 for his effort to push his career earnings over the 100k mark to $102,024 and his career record is now 44 starts, 12 wins, 6 places and 12 shows for a 27% win rate and 68% trifecta finish.

Friday Notes

With the 1st race as the feature the next 6 began with Danny Zuko and Kevin Orozco up. Orozco making it happen with a very limited number of chances this week only 5 mounts all week after winning 4 last Sunday. Danny Zuko races for Two Putts for the Win #7, Dennis Snowden and Lucarelli Racing and trained by Frank Lucarelli. Javier Matias came up with another off the pace win in the 3rd on 2-1 Poppy’s C Note to win by a neck over betting favorite Union Bliss. Poppy’s C Note races for Elodio Madrigal and Ruiz Garcia and trained by Madrigal.

Kevin Radke wasted little time in the 4th taking Chinook Quick straight to the lead building a length advantage while setting all the fractions in this 5 1/2 furlong sprint of 21.36 and 44.85. At the top of the stretch Radke had plenty left and Quick extended to a 2 3/4 length win in a time of 1:04.21. Chinook Quick races for John Parker and trained by Shelly Crowe. The 3-year-old filly is a Washington bred by Atta Boy Roy out of Dance with Effie by Chhata Dance and was bred by John Parker. Alex Cruz and Jorge Rosales remain a deadly combination and got together on yet another win with JT’s A. T. M. in the 5th with a hard earned front running victory. Cruz sent JT and was hooked with Orcadian Storm but eventually fended off that challenge and then held off a fast closing Miso Fast for the win. Martin Valenzuela is the owner of JT who ran the 6-furlongs in 1:09.95.

In the 6th race owner/trainer Edwin “Eddie” Comier got his 1st win of the year. Eddie also is in his first year as chart caller for Equibase at Emerald Downs. We’ve been pulling for Eddie to get that win and he did it with a deep closer in Loose Ball. He needed to make sure Loose Ball had some speed to run at so he also entered Too Tall to Call a natural front-runner. Eddie was hoping for the exacta but did get Too Tall to set the pace in the mile run while Loose Ball was dead last with Javier Matias. In true Matias fashion he sat on Loose Ball on the rail swung for home and had saved all that ground now in 4th angled out at the 1/8th pole and Loose Ball exploded easily passing all runners for a length win at 4-1. Loose Ball ran the 1-mile in 1:39.07 and is a Washington bred by Houseofroyalhearts out of Always Dangerous by Hat Trick and bred by Woodway Stables.

In the finale a solid 6-1 shot would stalk and take the lead and never really be challenged. Jake Samuels didn’t wait to long to take the lead on Marque It Up and the closers were simply too far back in the 5 1/2 furlong run to make a dent in Margue It Up’s lead. The final time was 1:04.01 and the 4-year-old gelding races for Luciano Medina and is trained by James Gilmour.

The end of card pay-outs were pretty good too a chance for a decent pay-out. The 50-cent pick 3 was $101.85, the 50-cent pick 4 paid $442.75 and the 50-cent pick 5 was good for $3,464.35. The 50-cent Super Hi-5 paid $575.15.
