(Federal Way, WA) On Thursday the WIAA presented the State Diving Championships. Normally the diving championships would be part of the 2 day swim meet but with Covid restrictions they moved diving to its own day. We’re not sure but possibly this may be a permanent move, the Diving portion went exceptionally well.
Below are the official results of all 3 meets with pictures and some video clips as well.

Anacortes swept the top 2 spots with Zephy Blee upsetting top qualifier and teammate Fletcher Olson. Blee just never turned in a bad or even sub-par dive hitting all 11 and winning by nearly 30 points. Olson started a little slow but rallied and was clearly 2nd best. Both Blee and Olson are Juniors and will have to be dealt with again in 2023.
Despite taking the top 2 spots and 10th place with Sam Davis earning 44 points for the Anacortes swim team effort it was not the top team performance as Steilacoom placed 4 in the top 9 scoring 52 team points. Connor McPhail led the way with a 3rd place finish, Aaron Burlingame took 5th, Carlo Zavala was 6th and Nate Englund just missed an individual medal in 9th.
The other medalists included 4th place finisher Jackson Legan of Sehome, Michael Rosen of Bellingham and Ezekiel Stansberry from Burlington-Edison.

Nicolo Ponnekanti from Stadium shined from start to finish and although had a couple of even dives after the 1st break was in control of the Championship. He scored all of the team points for Stadium and finished 4th in the team Diving standings. Christopher Sellers was also solid right from the start. Sellers led the Bishop Blanchet squad partnering with Will Gillespie who finished 10th to score 24 points, good enough for 3rd.
Leading the team standings was Ballard who got a 1-2 punch from Caleb Pook and Oliver Stacey who finished 3rd and 4th racking up 31 points. Auburn was 2nd with 25 points as Levi Erickson and Isaak Osmak also went back to back finishing 6th and 7th.
Oak Harbor and Marysville-Getchell tied for 5th with 15 each and MG’s Nate Huh-Orrantia took 5th place and Brad Johnson finished 16th while Oak Harbor’s John Blankman had an impressive run finishing 8th after starting 25th and last following his first dive. Link to On-Demand Video on the NFHS Subscription Network Issaquah's Robert Gref and Lake Stevens' Jaden Cardona put on a show each scoring well over 400 points with Gref threatening 500 scoring 475.60, easily the highest of all classifications. Cardona was on an island himself with 428.05 with the next closest at 371. Gref's 20 points was enough for Issaquah to hold on to 1st place in the diving portion of the team competition. In fact only Glacier Peak and Woodinville had more than 1 diver competing. GP's duo of Benjamin Gymrek and Gavin Clements finished 10th and 13th respectively. Only one of Woodinville's divers scored finishing 16th. The other top 8 finishers were Ty Mitton of Mt Si a Freshman, Zachary Halter from Skyline was 4th, 5th place went Luke Vlases of Mount Rainier, Maxx Reagan from Tahoma was 6th, 7th went to South Kitsap's Karter Warner also a Frosh and 8th place went to Ben Leonardo of Kennedy Catholic.
