3 girls games on our air Thursday night and none bigger than in Tenino where the Beavers hosted Montesano for the League Title. In the other games Toledo won a critical game to keep pace and Lakes pulled out thriller over Mount Tahoma. Our coverage below…

EVCO 1A Girls
Montesano 45, Tenino 36

(Tenino, WA) This game was for all the marbles, the league title was on the line because the Montesano Bulldogs will not have anymore games with the Hoquiam Grizzlies cancelling the rest of their season due to a covid issue in the school. Each team had 1 league loss to each other, Tenino won the season opener hosting Monte 45-29 and the Bulldogs held sway on their home court 11 days later with a 57-43 win.

The question was which game would the tie-breaker most resemble? It clearly was the 2nd match-up where the more physical Bulldogs were quick to find out what the officials were and weren’t going to allow. They found out the officials were going to let a lot of contact go and Montesano took full advantage. Tenino seemed hesitant to meet the physicality of the bulldogs except for Alivia Hunter who would stick out and somehow ended up fouling out of the game. There were a total of 24 fouls called in the game but 9 of them were called in the last 3 minutes of the game.

With the Bulldogs instigating contact and receiving a huge disproportionate amount of free throws with a total of 20 comparted to Tenino’s 2. However, that was not the difference in the game, it would have been a 20+ point win for Montesano but their free throw shooting was simply horrendous hitting just 6 of 20 or just 30%. Tenino did hit both of their free throws in fact it was Alivia Hunter’s only points in the game.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-2 lead but Tenino came back and took an 8-7 lead. It would be their only lead in the game and it lasted about 10 seconds. Montesano would then go on 5-0 run to finish the quarter with a 12-8 lead. They would push it to 17-8 to start the 2nd quarter and then 21-10 before settling for a 25-13 halftime lead.

In the 2nd half the Bulldogs continued to control the paint and although battling the Beavers did not allow Montesano run off a big quarter and kept them below their game average but their offense was stymied with the aggressive play of the Bulldogs constantly slapping away the ball and not allowing the Beaver shooters to find any kind of rhythm. Montesano’s offense came at the Beavers from all angles with 7 different players scoring led by Paige Lisherness’s 14, Jaiden King was next with 8.

For Tenino, Ashley Schow did her best to keep the Beavers close with 17 leading all scorers, Grace Vestal knocked down 11 and handled the ball well for Tenino.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-1 in league and will finish their regular season with a non-league game on Saturday at Black Hills High School. Tenino fell to 6-2 in EVCO 1 A play and takes on WF West in a non-league game Friday night and will finish league play at Elma on Monday.

Our Pacific Sports Spa visiting player of the game went to Paige Lisherness and our Thorbeckes home team player of the game was Grace Vestal.

(Lakewood, WA) The Lancers held on to a piece of 3rd place with this narrow victory over a determined Mount Tahoma squad. A late free-throw was the difference in the game for Lakes who led by 1 at the half and would record the 1 point win in the end.
