PCL Boys Basketball
Lakes 72, Stadium 56
(Lakewood, WA) Both teams came into this game looking for their 1st win of the year and for very different reasons. The Lakes Lancers were playing their 5th game and after struggling in their first 2 games just came up short with a pair of 6 point losses in their last 2 games. Meanwhile, the Stadium Tigers have no wins because they hadn’t played a game yet. They were quarantined due to a positive covid test for 14 days and in fact came into this game absolutely cold with no games and no practices coming into this game. Coach Dominic Batten said the choice of coming back day 1 to play a game is not the ideal situation but when the team was asked would they rather play a game on day 1 or practice on day 1 back the vote was lopsided.
It didn’t look like the Tigers had missed a beat coming out firing and taking a lead dumping in 20 points in the 1st quarter and then pushing it to 37 for the half. George Thomas led the charge with 13 while Kellen O’Halloran added 10 and off the bench Sylvan Baldwin-“Money” also chipped in 10. Combined the trio knocked down 7 3-balls.
The Lancers hung close and did not allow Stadium to build a big lead. Aj Manning-Blanks scored 11 and Keon Dewalt matched it with 11 off the bench with 11 while 3 others also scored a combined 11 points Brandon McCray, Malachi Keller and Paul Tii and Lakes trailed by just 4 at the break.
The 3rd quarter would be the stretch that turned this game around with a smothering Lakes defense combined with a cold shooting Stadium squad resulted in the Tigers only scoring 2 points for the entire 3rd quarter. Meanwhile, Dewalt started the 2nd half and simply went off finishing with 32 points. He hit 7 3’s, 5 in the 2nd half and led the 17-2 scoring burst to give Lakes a 50-39 lead after 3. George Morales would also get in the scorebook for Lakes while McCray added 5 along with Tii and 4 more from Manning-Blanks.
Lakes would extend their lead to as many as 21 in the 4th quarter and it certainly looked like no practice or games for 14 days caught up with the Tigewrs but they did not give in and kept battling to score 17 in the final quarter. O’Halloran would heat up and hit 3 from behind the arc and finish with 21 points. Thomas would end with 16 and “Money” had 15. Taten Ells, Mateo Hill and Zechariah Stallworth each scored as well.
Lakes got that 1st win and are now 1-4 while Stadium dropped to 0-1. Our Visiting team player of the game was Kellen O’Halloran and our home team player of the game was Keon Dewalt.
