Adna 2, Kalama 1 (Shoot-Out 3-1)

(Adna, WA) The battle between the top teams of the Central 2B was what you would expect close and down to the wire. It appeared this might be a high scoring affair with Adna’s Presley Smith popped in a shot in just the 4th minute to take a quick 1-0 lead. After that it slowed to a snail’s pace with the Pirates far more aggressive with multiple shots but the Chinook’s backline and keeper, Mary Morell held them at bay.

In stoppage time one of the few runs by Kalama ended up in front of the Pirate keeper MaKaela Meister when a foul was called giving Kalama a penalty kick. Ruby Jackson took the kick and slipped it past Meister to tie the score which held to the break at 1-1. As the 2nd half kicked off it was clear that Kalama was set on protecting the tie and looked for that one opportunity to try and turn the outcome in their favor.

Meantime, Adna was attacking racking up 11 corner kicks and several shots on goal. Morell had 2 spectacular punch over saves to keep the score all even. The Chinook’s defense was up to the task between Morell and Ava Beck they kept the Pirates off the board and pushed the game to overtime.

No surprise that Kalama could again deny Adna for another 10 minutes of Golden goal OT it sent the match to a shootout. Lily Given was up first for the Nooks and Meister punch it out for the save. Payton Aselton then kicked for Adna and scooted it past for the score to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the shoot-out. Meister then lined up to kick for Adna but Morell denied her and that was followed with goal by Sophie Given to tie it up at 1-1.

In the 3rd round Meister once again came through covering the shot from Kailey Shipley opening the door for Adna to re-take the lead which they did on a shot by Brynn Arrington. In the 4th round, Meister came up with a huge stop, it looked like she knew where Beck was going to shoot before Beck did as she shuffled to her right to punch the shot away. Jordyn Swenson then lined up and completely fooled Morell who went one way and Swenson went the other for the easy goal to end the shoot-out giving Adna the 3-1 advantage.

Adna improves to 6-0 in league play and Kalama falls to 5-1. Our Thorbeckes Players of the Game went to the Pirates MaKaela Meister and the Nooks Ava Beck.

Adna went to PK’s to knock off the defending 2B State Champs Kalama with MaKaela Meister’s save followed by the clinching goal from Jordyn Swenson.
