Is it really the end of September already?! Wow time flies and the Prep Football season has not disappointed. Week 4 of the game we covered were very interesting from all classifications. Below are scores and stories or re-caps of games including our post game shows from the games we broadcast and links to other coverage. Let’s kick this thing off! (Bold scores are games that were broadcast on ESN)
Yelm 42, Gig Harbor 18 After a sloppy start for both teams the Tornado’s got things going when quarterback Ben Hoffman scampered into the endzone after a Tides’ fumble to take a 6-0 lead. The PAT was no good and was just the start of a rough night for kickers and 2-point tries. Yelm extended their lead after the Tornados took over and Hoffman found Sylas Franklin on the other end of a 43-yard touchdown toss and again the kick missed leaving it 12-0.
After a punt and a big return by Austin Schaler the Tornados then turned to the running game marching it down the field and capped again with Hoffman running it in for the score. Hoffman then connected with Franklin on the 2-point conversion to make it 20-0.
Gig Harbor would answer back with a nice 15-play drive as QB Cade Dessert mixed the plays with run and pass. As they drove toward the goal line they were stopped at the one but Trevor Zeitner plowed in for the score. The PAT missed and at the half Yelm led 20-6.
Carson Amendt would blast in a 3rd quarter touchdown after a tight call went the Tornados favor on a fumble which looked like Gig Harbor recovered but look closely on our video it is hard to say there was control before the player hit the sideline. Yelm would push their lead to 26-6.
Here is the video of the tight fumble call, you can hear the Gig Harbor coaches who clearly disagree…
Gig Harbor would answer on the next drive with Jacob Dolven’s 1-yard run but again the PAT failed and it was 26-12. This made the tight call all the more important as Yelm maintained a 14-point lead instead of a 1-score difference. The Tornoados then pulled away with a pair of TD tosses by Hoffman the first to Franklin from 17 out, Amendt ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 34-12 and then a 33-yard strike to Schaler with the 2 point conversion a little toss from Hoffman to Amendt and it was 42-12. The Tides got a late TD when Dessert hit Zane Skansi for a 25 yard TD and the final score was 42-18.
Yelm improves to 2-2 overall but more importantly 2-0 in league play while Gig Harbor suffered their first loss and are 3-1 and 1-1. Both teams are on the road this next week with the Tornados at Capital and the Tides at North Thurston.
