WF West 71, White River 38

(Chehalis, WA) This was a battle between the #2 and #4 ranked teams in the 2A RPI rankings and the Bearcats were anxious to put their worst loss of the year to #1 ranked Black Hills in the rearview mirror and they did it with a smothering defense and a huge offensive burst in the 2nd quarter to cruise to the easy win.

White River hung in with the Bearcats leading 8-7 in the 1st quarter but the Cats would reel off 6 and finish the quarter with a 13-8 lead and would never look back. In the 2nd quarter the Cats defense led by Kiara Steen and Julia Johnson pressing the Hornets full court again limited the WR offense to just 8 points and they finished with just 16 at the break. Their leading scorer sat out the last 5+ minutes of the 1st half after picking up a key 3rd foul.

Meantime the Bearcat offense was just as high pressured as the defense led by Johnson’s 14 with a pair of 3’s. Shasta Lofgren had 8 and Lexie Strasser 6. Erika Brumfield was a rebounding machine in the 1st half and dished several assists as she controlled the paint. WFW would finish with 23 2nd quarter points and take a commanding 36-16 lead.

The Bearcats cooled off a little bit in the 3rd scoring 14 but White River could never get their offense rolling. WR scored 12 in the 3rd and then emptied their bench in the 4th quarter for a good portion of the game. Georgia Lavinder led the Hornets with 14 and was named our Tommy Lowe of the Greene Realty Group Player of the Game for White River. WFW’s Julia Johnson finished with a game high 24 to take our Bearcat Player of the Game award.

Erika Brumfield took our ProActive Physical Therapy Play of the Game with her assist passes to Lexie Strasser in the 2nd half. With the win WF West improves to 11-2 overall while White River suffered only their 2nd loss of the season and are now 16-2.
