Aberdeen 53, WF West 51
(Chehalis, WA) The Evco 2A league looks like it is going to be a tug-o-war from start to finish and this match-up played right into the early scramble. The Bobcats jumped in the Bearcats and built as much as an 18-point lead before the home team Bearcats made their run and nearly came all the way back.
The Bobcats Victor Gomez came out with the hot hand scoring the 1st 7 points and Aberdeen held a 7-2 lead. They would extend that lead to 18-7 after the 1st 8 minutes of the game. Gomez got some scoring help from Braden Castleberry-Taylor who was the recipient of 3 long passes that he turned into quick points for the Bobcats.
In the 2nd quarter the Bobcats picked up where they left off pushing the ball and scoring including a pair of 3’s from Ben Dublanko and Alonzo Coburn and they would pull out to a 25-7 lead. The Bearcats would finally put together a run late in the half and outscore Aberdeen 13-4 in the final 2 minutes and got back to a single digit deficit. Bailey Cooper led the 1st half for WFW with 7 points, Brandon White had 5 and off the bench Troy Yarter hit a big 3-ball to help close the gap.
In the 3rd quarter the 2 teams traded places as the Bearcats made a run at Aberdeen only to see the Bobcats pull away in the final minutes getting back to a 9-point lead 42-33 as the 3rd quarter ended in a push setting up a remarkable 4th quarter.
The Bobcats Gomez hit a quick 2 making the score 44-33 and back to a double digit lead but that would be it for awhile as WFW reeled off 9 unanswered points pulling within 2 at 44-42. Dakota Hawkins led the comeback including a spectacular steal for a lay-up and drawing the foul for a 3-point play. With 4:12 to play and a struggling Aberdeen offense got a huge boost from Dublanko who hit 1 of his 3 3-point shots to snap the 9-0 run and give Aberdeen a 5-point lead. This game changing shot also earned our ProActive Physical Therapy Play of the Game.
The other play in consideration for the Play of the Game came from a great move from Castleberry-Taylor who got the ball down in the paint, hesitated and got the Bearcat defense in the air and then split defenders for an easy lay-in again pushing the Bobcat lead back to 5. Brandon White would hit a 3 for the Bearcats as time expired but the Bobcats had already iced their 1st league win of the year.
Our Tommy Lowe of Greene Realty Players of the Game went to Aberdeen’s Victor Gomez and WF Wests’ Bailey Cooper. Aberdeen is now 1-1 and 4-6 overall while WF West drops to 1-1 and 7-4.
