12/22/16
Tumwater 66, River Ridge 50
(Lacey, WA) The River Ridge offense for the 2nd night in a row got off to a slow start and their opponent took full advantage in both games. On Wednesday night the Capital Cougars led 24-7 after the 1st quarter, in their Thursday night game against Tumwater at St Martin’s University, the T-Birds jumped out to a 20-10 lead. The T-Birds powered the ball inside the paint with forward Cade Otton scoring the 1st 4 points of the game from inside and then sophomore forward Thomas Drayton going to work scoring 12 in the 1st half with 8 of those points coming at the free throw line.
Drayton took great in-passes from Brian Marty, Andrew May and CJ Geathers and although only hit 2 field goals made the Hawks pay at the free throw line. Isaiah Koukal would chip in 4 points off the bench while Jack Koelsch hit the only 3 of the 1st half for Tumwater. The Hawks would again rely on Trey Dorfner for nearly all their offense in the 1st half as the Hawks continue to miss mid-range shots and struggled at the free throw line finishing the night 7-19. Tumwater would hold on to their 10-point lead at the break up 32-22.
In the 3rd quarter the Hawks finally got things going offensively putting up 18 points and getting points from Josh Kennedy, Kelle Sanders, Jordan Skipper-Brown and Denero Washington. Washington would lead the Hawks in the 2nd half with 8 points. The only problem with the 3rd quarter was as the Hawks offense heated up, the T-Birds boiled over.
Tumwater would hit 6 2nd half 3-pointers including back-to-back from Andrew May and a spectacular rainbow shot from CJ Geathers as the shot clock expired. This shot would earn our ProActive Physical Therapy Play of the Game. In the end Tumwater countered the 18 points of River Ridge with 19 of their own extending their lead to 11. The T-Birds then pulled away in the 4th to secure their 4th win of the season improving to 4-3 while River Ridge fell to 5-3. Both teams will play in the North Thurston Holiday Classic next Wednesday and Thursday.
Our Tommy Lowe of the Greene Realty Group Players of the Game went to Tumwater’s Thomas Drayton and River Ridge’s Trey Dorfner.
