Capital 78, River Ridge 63
(Lacey, WA) The Capital Cougars suffered their first loss of the year in their last outing on a half court shot as time expired giving Tumwater a 1-point win. The Cougs were anxious to put that game in the rearview mirror and knew they had a challenge in the always tough River Ridge Hawks.
Capital jumped on the Hawks immediately and quickly shot out to a 10-4 lead and increased it to 18-4 before taking a 24-7 lead after the 1st quarter. Luke Layton led the offense with 16 1st half points while Chris Schnellman added 8 off the bench. TJ and Matt Mickelson handled and distributed the ball all over the floor. Matt was also stingy on defense picking off several steals.
The Cougs kept the pressure on but the Hawks offense would wake up knocking down 16 but could only close the gap 2 points and trailed 38-23 at the break. Tre Dorfner led the Hawks with 9 including 2 3-balls while Kolten Knox was productive off the bench with 6.
In the 3rd quarter the Cougs blew up with 24 with multiple players chipping in Dawson Landers added to his 5 1st half points finishing with 12, Jack Collard hit a 3 and Tommy Richardson scored for a total of 7 different Cougs getting in the scorebook. The Hawks remained fairly cool except for Dorfner who finished the night with a game high 22 with 6 3-pointers.
River Ridge trailed by 25 heading into the 4th quarter and would make a run trimming the lead down to 11 but Matt Mickelson would hit a huge 3 preventing the Hawks from cutting the lead to single digits and push the Cougar’s to a 14 point lead and Ridge would never get closer. Matt’s 3-point shot would earn our ProActive Physical Therapy Play of the Game.
The Cougars improved to 7-1 overall while River Ridge falls to 5-2. Our Tommy Lowe of the Greene Realty Group Player’s of the Game went to Capital’s Luke Layton and River Ridge’s Tre Dorfner.
