Columbia-White Salmon 3, United 2

(Winlock, WA) This match was for control of the Trico 1A league as White Salmon came in with a 5-0 league mark and United was 4-0-1. The difference between the 2 teams was the Bruins beat LaCenter 1-0 while United tied the Wildcats 1-1. Both coaches expected a physical and tough match and that is exactly what played out.

It was a little surprising because United jumped on the Bruins quickly when Gustavo Barragan fired a shot into the upper far side of the goal in the 7th minute and came away with a 1-0 lead. United continued to pressure the Bruins and played most of the first 30 minutes on the Columbia side of the field. Keeper Leo Guerrero was under fire but kept United from adding another goal until Barragan struck again in the 26th minute with his 2nd unassisted goal from just inside the box a low laser just inside the post and it was 2-0 with United having all the momentum.

The Bruins would take back some of that momentum late in the half in stoppage time when Mario Gonzalez took a long pass from Ivan Cortes and lofted a beautiful shot over the top of United keeper Nolan Patching. Patching was in perfect position but the shot by Gonzalez was also perfect and just out of reach of Patching and they would go to the break with United up 2-1.

In the 2nd half it all turned around with the Bruins now stepping up their offensive attacks and put tons of pressure on the United back line and Patching. Ivan Cortes would break through finally in the 59th minute with another long shot from outside the box. Patching again had good position but the shot was dead on and just out of reach of Patching.

The Bruins would take the lead in the 65th minute on a goal from Yvan Escoto. Escoto took the ball in front of the goal with several other players from both teams and found a seam and knocked in the go-ahead and eventual winning shot.

United did come firing back and had several chances late including 3 corner kicks in a row but each time a defender or keeper Leo Guerrero would come up with a block. Guerrero would come up with a the ProActive Play of the Game punching out a high hard shot into the upper corner securing the 3-2 win.

The Bruins improved to 6-0 in league and 8-0 overall while United falls to 4-1-1 in Trico play and 7-2-1 overall. Our Tommy Lowe of Greene Realty Players of the Game went to the Bruins Ivan Cortes and for United Gustavo Barragan.
