United 5, WF West 2

(Chehalis, WA) The combined Toledo-Winlock United team are a pair of 2B schools that compete at the 1A level. United completed the Daily Double of taking down both Lewis County 2A teams, Centralia and now WF West to reign supreme among the local schools. Now of course both games are non-league and last night it was made clear by Bearcats coach Tino Sanchez that winning was not his top priority whereas for the United team coach Horst Malunat was a bit more motivated to win the match and both approaches actually made sense.

For Malunat this would be their last non-league game of the season and now roll into a long and usually tough Trico league schedule so pulling it all together for his starters and playing well was important to launch into the games that count. Meantime, Sanchez and the Bearcats don’t have a league match until April 8th in the 4-team cozy Evco 2A league and he has a very young squad on top of it, so young not one senior on the varsity team. Sanchez says of course he would welcome a win but with such a young team it is more important to see improvement and to see his kids make good decisions while at the same time continue to try players at different positions to find the best line-up for league action.

This match played out as both coaches somewhat predicted with the Bearcats playing hard but at times could tell were struggling to jell together while the United squad simply got better as the match rolled on. United would strike first when Jonathan Van Vleck fired a great passing shot to Fernando Munoz who knew what to do with it and knocked it into the back of the net in the 10th minute. This scoring combination would also go on to take our ProActive Physical Therapy Play of the Game.

The Bearcats would strike back off the foot of Christian Moran in the 21st taking a pass from Brayden Mauermann and scoring the equalizer. United would take a 2-1 lead into halftime when Adair Garibay scored in the 28th minute with the help of Gustavo Barragan, the 1st of 2 assists for Barragan.

It would take Garibay just 7 minutes into the 2nd half before scoring his 2nd goal and did so with a beautiful crossing pass from Nicholas Patching for the assist and it was now 3-1 in favor of United. Moran would come right back for his 2nd goal pulling the Bearcats back within 1. Moran would make a spectacular unassisted goal with a great flip pass to himself past United keeper Dawson Hall for the score.

United would not slow down though and kept their assault up on Bearcats keeper Daniel Ford who unofficially faced 18 shots on goal. The next to find space past Ford was Andreas Malunat who scored in the 62nd to quickly push the lead back to 2 goals up 4-2 and then Garibay who had the assist to Malunat would get his hat trick in the 78th on Barragan’s 2nd assist in stoppage time to finish off the scoring 5-2. United improved to 3-1 on the season while the Bearcats dropped to 2-2.

Our Tommy Lowe of the Greene Realty Group Players of the Game went to United’s Adair Garibay with 3 goals and an assist and for WF West Christian Moran who scored both goals for the Bearcats.
